CellsBin Joins Virginia Tech-Led IARPA PICARD Program

Virginia Tech News – Tiny tech, big impact: Miniaturized gas-analyzing tech boldly moves research forward

CellsBin Inc. joined the Virginia Tech-led team selected by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) for the PICARD program, participating as an industry subawardee in a multi-year effort to advance aerosol detection technology.

PICARD, short for Pursuing Intelligent Complex Aerosols for Rapid Detection, is a 42-month research initiative focused on sensing platforms that can rapidly detect and identify hazardous aerosolized chemicals in complex, real-world environments. The program is designed to improve performance when particle sizes, weather conditions, dust, pollen, smoke, and other background materials interfere with conventional detection methods.

The multidisciplinary Virginia Tech team brings together expertise in advanced sensing, optics, artificial intelligence, and analytical science. CellsBin contributes capabilities in photonic sensing, optical system design, microfluidics, computational imaging, and AI-enabled signal processing. These technologies build on the company's experience detecting and characterizing extremely rare biological and chemical targets with high sensitivity and analytical precision.

The program will explore both point-based and standoff detection approaches, integrating hardware and software to improve chemical specificity, sensitivity, and operational performance. CellsBin's role demonstrates how technologies developed for Rare-Cell Biology™ can be adapted to demanding applications beyond healthcare, including biosecurity, environmental monitoring, and national security.

Participation in PICARD also expands CellsBin's portfolio of collaborations with universities, government agencies, and research organizations working on high-impact sensing challenges.
